AI Receptionist Cost in 2026: Plans vs a Custom Build

AI Receptionist Cost in 2026: Plans vs a Custom Build
October 30, 20267 min read

The short answer: Packaged AI receptionist plans for a US small business start at $49 to $79 a month, and the top published tiers of the minute- and caller-based plans reach $299 a month, before overage. Rosie’s pricing page lists $49 a month for 250 minutes, Goodcall’s pricing page lists $79 a month for 100 unique callers, and Smith.ai’s AI Receptionist pricing charges by the call, from $2.00 down to $1.67 a call on its Pro tiers. A custom agent built on a voice platform is billed on usage instead: Retell AI’s pricing page lists $0.07 to $0.31 a minute, plus a one-time build fee that depends on what the agent must connect to. Every price below was checked on the vendor’s own page in October 2026.

Three ways vendors bill, and why it matters: The headline price hides the more important question, which is what gets counted. Rosie counts minutes. Smith.ai counts calls, and argues on its pricing page that per-minute billing rewards a vendor for long calls. Goodcall counts people: one phone number, once a month, so a customer who calls back five times in March is billed once. None of these is better in general. If your calls are short and frequent, a minute bucket goes a long way. If callers book jobs and talk through details, per-caller billing protects you from long calls. If a single mishandled call costs you a client worth thousands, a per-call plan with a human backup may be worth its higher rate. Look at last month’s call log before you look at any pricing table.

Per-minute plans: what each tier actually includes: On Rosie’s pricing page, the $49 Professional plan includes 250 minutes a month, message taking for two scenarios and appointment links sent by text. Booking directly onto your calendar, warm transfers and live call transfers start on the $149 Scale plan, which includes 1,000 minutes. The $299 Growth plan includes 2,000 minutes, transfers that try several numbers until someone answers, and training on your own documents and policies. The lesson applies to most vendors: the entry price is real, but the features that make an AI receptionist useful, putting a job on the calendar and getting an urgent caller to a person, often sit one tier up. Price the tier that does the job you need, not the one on the banner.

Per-caller plans: predictable, if callers repeat: Goodcall’s pricing page lists Starter at $79 a month for 100 unique customers, then 79 cents for each extra customer; Growth at $129 a month for 500, then 26 cents each; and Scale at $299 a month for 2,000, then 15 cents each. It does not meter minutes, says spam and wrong numbers do not count, and includes a local number or lets you forward your existing one. This model suits businesses where the same customers call several times, such as a contractor rescheduling a job or a clinic confirming an appointment. It suits you less if most callers are one-time shoppers, because then every call is a new billable customer.

Per-call plans with a human behind the AI: Smith.ai’s AI Receptionist pricing offers a free plan with 25 real calls a month and $3.00 a call after that. Its Pro tiers bill $2.00 a call at 75 calls a month, $1.80 at 150 and $1.67 at 300, with extra calls at $2.50, $2.30 and $2.17. What the higher rate buys is a transfer to a live North America-based receptionist when the AI cannot handle a call, at any hour. The same page says known spam numbers are filtered before the AI answers, lets you remove up to 10% of calls as spam each billing cycle, and runs month to month with 30 days’ notice to cancel. Custom prompting and custom integrations are listed only on its Enterprise plan, so check which tier you need if the agent has to work inside your own software.

What a person costs, for comparison: The US Bureau of Labor Statistics puts the 2025 median pay for receptionists at $38,010 a year, or $18.27 an hour, and that is wages only, for one person on one shift. Goodcall’s pricing page says live answering services run about $1.50 to $1.90 a minute; that is a competitor’s figure, so treat it as a rough marker rather than a quote. The comparison is not as simple as it looks. A good receptionist handles an angry customer, notices when something is off and fixes problems no script anticipated. An AI receptionist is strongest on the calls a person cannot take: after hours, during lunch, and when three people ring at once.

What a custom agent costs to run: A custom build usually sits on a voice platform that charges by the minute. Retell AI’s pricing page shows a sample rate of $0.11 a minute, made up of $0.04 for the language model, $0.055 for Retell’s voice infrastructure and $0.015 for text-to-speech, with US phone calls through its Twilio or Telnyx numbers at $0.015 a minute on top. Its pay-as-you-go range is $0.07 to $0.31 a minute depending on the model and voice, with 20 concurrent calls included. Vapi’s pricing page charges $0.05 a minute for hosting and passes model costs through at cost; its own calculator estimates $82 to $129 a month for 1,000 minutes. If you bring your own numbers, Twilio’s US voice pricing, current as of August 2026, lists a local number at $1.15 a month and $0.0085 a minute to receive calls. Compliance adds up quickly: Vapi lists HIPAA compliance as a $2,000 a month add-on.

The build fee, and what drives it: There is no honest single number for the build, because the work is mostly integration. The price moves with how many systems the agent reads from and writes to (your CRM, your calendar, your job management or practice software), how many call types it must handle, how it decides when to hand a caller to a person and passes on what was said, how its answers are tied to your real prices and policies so it does not make things up, and how much it is tested on recordings of real calls before it goes live. Add the ongoing work too: someone has to review transcripts, fix wrong answers and update the agent when your services, hours or prices change. A quote that leaves out maintenance is not the full cost.

A worked example: Assume a business gets 300 calls a month averaging three minutes, about 900 minutes in total. These are assumptions for illustration, not data, so plug in your own call log. Rosie’s $149 Scale plan includes 1,000 minutes, so it covers that volume. Smith.ai’s Pro tier at 300 calls bills $1.67 a call, about $501 a month, with human backup included. On Goodcall, if those 300 calls come from fewer than 500 different people, the $129 Growth plan covers them. A custom agent at Retell’s sample rate of $0.11 a minute plus $0.015 for telephony comes to about $112.50 a month in usage, before the build fee and the maintenance described above. Usage alone rarely decides it; what the agent must do decides it.

When a packaged plan wins, and when a custom build wins: Buy a packaged plan when most calls are questions, messages and bookings into a calendar the plan already supports, when your volume is modest and when you have no developer to own a custom system. Do not pay for a custom build if a $149 plan does the job. A custom agent starts to pay off when it must act inside your own software, such as checking a technician’s schedule, creating a job, running an intake checklist or routing by rules a plan cannot express; when you need compliance terms a plan does not offer; or when you want to own the prompts, the call data and the phone number outright. Whichever you choose, start with after-hours and overflow calls for two weeks, read every transcript, and widen its job only once it handles those well.

Questions to ask any vendor before you sign: Who owns the phone number, and can you take it with you if you leave? Can you export every recording and transcript? What counts as a billable call, minute or customer, and are spam, wrong numbers and transferred calls included? What is the overage rate, and what happens when the agent cannot answer or a transfer fails? What is the notice period to cancel? For a custom build, add three more: whose accounts do the voice platform, the phone numbers and the model run on, who maintains the agent after launch, and will you receive the code and configuration at handover?

Where WebVerse Arena fits: WebVerse Arena is a Chennai-based studio that designs and builds websites, apps, SaaS and AI automation, including voice AI receptionists, for clients in the US, the UAE and India, working remotely across time zones and handing over the code and accounts to the client. We quote after a short scoping call, because the integrations decide the price. Tell us what your receptionist needs to do, or see how we build AI agents and AI automation. If a packaged plan covers your calls, that is the cheaper answer, and the scoping call is a fair place to find that out.
